Both sections of fifth grade have math, spelling, and reading classes
every day. We are still using Chicago Everyday Math. Students are being
challenged to think at higher levels as they view mathematics in an "everyday"
setting. The curriculum of choice for spelling is Scott Foresman. Selected
words are used each week for workbook activities and a test is taken over the
words every Friday. An accelerated math program has been installed in our room, so we
can do practice assignments, tests, and exercises with the computer.
Students improve their reading skills by practicing reading
each day from their text, Literature Works. Also, students
learn and apply reading strategies throughout the year. Book reports in fifth
grade include designing and displaying shadow boxes, creating posters and
interviews with famous people, and completing quizzes on the Internet. The PTO supports the school's reading program by sponsoring book
fairs and donating books to each reading classroom.
Students in fifth grade also focus on great writing techniques when writing
paragraphs, stories, essays, and poems. For example, the kids find it a
challenge to replace boring, passive verbs with active, exciting verbs and enjoy
seeing their writing suddenly come alive!
The focus of 6th grade World Geography is the
countries of North America, Europe, and Asia. Students learn
about the land, economy, and the people of the countries. |
