5th Grade Music Class

The vocal music class for 5th graders consists of: singing, harmony, composing songs as a group, notating music, reading music, and playing recorders better.  They learn to play chords on a keyboard to accompany the group that is singing.  They work to learn about keys, scale, chords and clapping rhythms.  As with every grade, their individual voice is recorded on their own audio tape to document their vocal range and musical progress.

We use an older curriculum book called “World of Music” and supplement it with a new curriculum aid called “Music Express” which is fun and effective in keeping up to date with new music and current with the world today.

Fifth graders perform at two concerts each year as part of their performance grade.  Since students receive a performance grade for these concerts, it is very important that they attend.  Parents should mark their calendar now.  Fifth graders are to dress nicely for these concerts.  Grades are based on 40% daily participation, 30% tests, homework, and quizzes, and 30% performance.  Fifth graders also perform in a MUSICAL each spring with the sixth graders.  It is usually performed during the morning at school.  Dates for this are pending.

6th Grade Chorus

Sixth grade chorus has an emphasis on good vocal production, posture, breathing, phrasing, dynamics, solfege, and two-part singing.  Choral octavos are used as the music, so they must learn how to read their musical part.  We also use a curriculum in which they work on solfege and rhythm reading.  Their voice is tape recorded.

Students in this group perform for the two concerts as part if their performance grade.  Since these concerts are for a performance grade, it is very important that they attend.  They go both semesters to a nursing home in the area as an outreach to the community.  Sixth graders also perform in a spring musical with the 5th Graders during the school day in the spring.

7-8th Grade Chorus

This class of 7 and 8th graders combined choose to be in a performing group.  We emphasize accurate and good vocal production, pitch matching, harmony, and more independent and accapella singing.  Posture, breathing techniques, dynamics, and Italian vowels are stressed along with diction and solfege.  Solo/Ensemble Contest groups are taken from this group and 6th grade chorus.  We tape record their vocal progress & keep a portfolio on them until they graduate from 8th grade.  They also perform for nursing homes.

DRESS CODE FOR CONCERTS: Blue music polo shirts, tan slacks, & dark shoes

There is an opportunity for them to be involved in IMEA AUDITIONS & FESTIVAL if chosen.  This is voluntary.  This year Stephanie Bruenger, Emily Nelson, Madeline Cox, Caroline Cramsey, Kassie Henry, Ali Kerr, MacKenzie Miller, Aleasha Perry, Kayla Peterson, and Kara Twaddell will be participating.

SELECT CHOIR

This is an auditioned group.  Students must be in chorus for one semester in order to be in Select Choir.  This group meets every WED. From 3:00-3:30 p.m. to sing together.  Sections meet in the morning before school from 7:45-8:05 a.m. as follows:  Mon.-Baritones, Tues.-Altos, and Wed.-Sopranos

This group sings the National Anthem for ballgames, sells singing telegrams for Valentine’s Day, does some show choir movements and performs at Solo/Ensemble Contest, concerts, community events and sometimes nursing homes.  They buy their own outfits or do fund raisers.  Students must stay academically eligible to perform with the group at state events, such as ballgames, etc.  They must not miss over three practices, including mornings before school and the Wed. after school, and they must not miss more than three performance dates for ballgames to be involved with the group.

Officers this year are:
Stephanie Bruenger----President
Whitney Willard----Vice President
Rachel Corrigan----Secretary
