The students started out the day by discussing fairness and the things that determine whether or not something is fair. Next, they played a cup stacking game where students with blue or green eyes were on one team and students with brown eyes were on the other. The purpose was to compliment and provide help for the team with blue and green eyes and discriminate against the team with brown eyes. The students and their leaders then discussed why this wasn’t fair, and how we sometimes show discrimination in our everyday lives. Teams then played relays using rules that were not fair so that one team had a definite advantage and chance to win. One team used both hands to stack cups during a relay race, while the other team used only one hand. This showed them what a person feels like when the rules are not fair. Also, the wellness committee asked students to taste test foods to see if they could tell which one was fat-free. Students learned that healthy food tastes good! The wellness committee also had a presentation on the benefits of good nutrition. A pep assembly was held for the 8th grade Lady Suns volleyball team who were heading to the state tournament the next day. The traveling trophy was awarded to the Purple Peaceful Penguins.
