On March 3, 2006, the main building of Southeastern High School was destroyed by fire.  The fire occurred during the lunch hour.  All students, faculty, and staff were evacuated safely.

On March 6th, school resumed for high school students with classes being held in the Bowen Methodist Church and the junior high building.

In August, the high school students returned to Augusta.  Classes will be held in mobile classrooms until a new building is completed.

On March 2, 2007, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in the high school gym.  All of the students in all three buildings were in attendance.  The members of the Southeastern Board of Education, the administration, the high school teachers, and the students were recognized for all the work that it has taken to turn a disaster into a brighter future.

Mr. Fox, high school principal, spoke about the challenges and opportunities as a result of the fire.

The audience enjoyed a presentation showing the fire, the days following, and the demolition of the building.

Amy Bell sang about doing what you believe it, even if you don't know the outcome.

Shovels for the ceremonial groundbreaking were presented to:  Patricia Phelps (board member), Mike Owen (superintendent of schools), Jordan Henry (high school student), Colton Eddington (junior high student), Abi Kerr (elementary student), Ruth Harris (high school teacher), Natalie Heiring (junior high teacher), Stephanie Fox (elementary teacher), George Slater (board member when 1956 portion of the high school was built), Jim Hurt (district maintenance director), and Carl Knight (high school custodian).
